Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks:
As many people have noticed, some of the geese migrating through Kansas this year are carrying Avian Influenza. Typically, the best course of action when you come across a dead bird is to leave it be where it is. However, when this is not feasible, you should wear gloves when moving and bagging the dead bird, and thoroughly wash your hands after disposal.
Birds that are infected with Avian Influenza may display symptoms including head shaking, disorientation, appearing “tame” and allowing themselves to be handled, and respiratory issues. Do not handle live wild birds if you come across one, and do not bring it into your home or to a rehabilitation center or zoo. Avian Influenza is highly transmissible between birds, domestic or wild, and to do so increases the chance of infecting other birds. While unlikely, transmission of Avian Influenza to mammals is not impossible, so it is best to avoid letting your pets consume dead birds.
If you have any questions, please contact KDWP Wildlife Disease Biologist Shane Hestings at (620) 342-0658.
